BlueStacks, the free Windows Android emulator, has launched a brand new version of the software that works directly in your browser. It’s called BlueStacks X, it runs in the cloud and will allow you to play all manner of Android games pretty much anywhere you have a direct internet connection.
This means, much like Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming, you’ll be able to access your favorite mobile games from Android directly on your iOS device or, if you want to go down the strangest route, directly in Discord?!
You and your server can launch games, share sessions, and update people on what you’ve dumped cash into.
It runs on a combination of Amazon’s AWS servers, as well as BlueStacks’ own now.gg, with all the heavy lifting (rendering, etc.) done via the device itself. The service will be free, but there are pre-roll ads (which I suspect ad blockers will cause issues with down the line).
On PC, it’ll bring up a heads-up display to show you on-screen controls, but the game choice seems fairly limited at the moment and if you have a recent Android phone or iPhone, most, if not all games available right now, are actually just on the devices anyway? This seems like a work in progress, but a welcome one despite the lack of selection.
BlueStacks do say that new games are coming weekly.
The website also seems to have been redone to allow for you to choose whether to download a game straight into BlueStacks natively on your Windows PC or play in the cloud – if it’s available – which is a nice touch.
