The next time you boot into your Windows 10 PC just let the thought cross your mind that you are only one of one billion Win 10 users on the planet at the moment. Yes. 1 billion.
It’s taken Microsoft just five years to achieve global OS domination with over half the PCs in existence running the latest version (NetMarketShare). It’s come a long way since they shipped me out to Seattle back in the day for the launch of Windows 95!
Back then, it was all about how DirectX was going to affect the future of PC gaming, and it turns out they weren’t wrong.
Corporate Vice President for Modern Life, Search & Devices at Microsoft Yusuf Mehdi said in a recent blog post:
“Today we’re delighted to announce that over one billion people have chosen Windows 10 across 200 countries resulting in more than one billion active Windows 10 devices. We couldn’t be more grateful to our customers, partners and employees for helping us get here.”
The magical billion number does include Xbox One consoles as well (in case you didn’t know that’s what your favourite gaming device uses in the backend). The only area they failed to dominate in was mobile, with Windows Phone (wow, that seems a long time ago) failing miserably.
With support for Windows 7 ending in January, those keen to keep their PC free of future vulnerabilities perhaps had no real choice but to upgrade. Still, there is no doubting Windows 10 will continue to evolve in the coming years – before eventually turning into Skynet. Happy times.
