If you’re having trouble connecting to your Wi-Fi network, you may need to reset your Xfinity Gateway. It only takes about 10 minutes, but you won’t lose your network settings.

Why Might You Need To Reset Your Xfinity Router?

The Xfinity router is probably the most important part of any Wi-Fi setup since it provides internet access from your computer to the rest of the world. This allows you to do pretty much anything on the internet like stream movies, play games, etc.

The problem here is that if there is not enough space in the hard drive then this can lead to issues such as slow connection speeds and even no internet at all.

There are many reasons why your Xfinity gateway might need to be reset, and these may include:

  • You receive error messages when trying to connect to your XFINITY Wi-Fi Network that says such things as ‘Cannot join existing connection’ or ‘cannot establish new connection’.
  • Your XFINITY Wi-Fi Connection keeps dropping out.
  • There is a message on the status page saying that the device has been activated and/or deactivated, but it does not work properly.
  • The router is not working correctly – some routers have issues where they don’t update their firmware which causes them to stop functioning correctly.
  • No internet signal after resetting the modem. This problem occurs when there is interference between the signal being broadcast from the Xfinity Modem and other devices broadcasting in the area. Modems need to be set up correctly in order for the internet to function properly.
  • You are getting errors on your Xfinity Wi-Fi network. This could mean that your router needs to be reset or a software upgrade. Many times, you can get past these errors by either upgrading your software or changing the channel that your router is currently using.

What Happens During A Reset Of Your Router?

When you restart your computer, you won’t be connected to your home internet network.

If you have Comcast Xfinity Voice, then you will be temporarily unable to call anyone, including emergency services, using a home phone unless the Gateway is working again.

If you have access to Xfinity Home, it will still be possible to use any home automation devices that are connected – this also applies to cameras.

It is important to note that any security sensors will not be affected by security measures, keeping your home safe and secure.

How Can I Reset My Xfinity Router?

Resetting the router is fairly easy to do. The steps below explain how to reset the Xfinity router. Once finished, make sure to rejoin your wireless network settings.

Sign In To Your Account

If you rent an XFi Gateway, you can visit xfinity.com or use the Xfinance app, which is available on the App Store and Google Play, and sign in to your account using your Xfinity username and password.

Restart

Scroll down to Troubleshooting on the xFi website and select Restart.

Restart Gateway

Head to the Xfinity app, and then scroll down until you reach Connection Trouble. Then, select the option to Restart Gateway.

Open Xfinity My Account App

Open the Xfinity My Account app (available for Apple and Android devices), and then click on the Internet tile.

Restart Device

Select your modem, and then select Restart this Device (this process may take up to 7 minutes). To log into your Xfinity account, use your Xfinity ID (email address) and password.

Restart Modem

Click on the “Manage Internet” button at the bottom of the page – if you then select Restart Modem, you’ll begin troubleshooting.

Start Troubleshooting

To start troubleshooting your modem, select Start Troubleshooting. It may take up to seven minutes for this to complete; your Internet will be down during this time.

Reconnecting To The Internet

If you’re having trouble connecting your Gateway to the Internet once you have reset the router, you should follow these steps to manually restart your Gateway:

Unplug/Plug Power Cable

Unplug the power cable from the router, wait for one minute, and then plug the power cable in again, making sure that you are connected to your home network.

Open a web browser and enter http://10.0.0.1 into the address bar. Then, sign in. Your username and password are not the same as your Wi-Fi name and password.

If you haven’t made any changes to your admin tool login, the default settings for your admin tool are: Username: admin, and Password: password (case-sensitive)

Reset/Restart Gateway

Once logged in, go to Troubleshooting and select Reset/Restart Gateway. You have five choices from here:

  • Reset – This option resets the Gateway similarly to unplugging and re-plugging it in.
  • Reset the Wi-Fi Module – This turns off your gateway’s Wi-Fi radio before switching it on again.
  • Reset Wi-Fi Router – Similar to resetting a wireless router connected to a cable modem.
  • Restore Wi-Fi Settings – This resets your wireless gateway back to its factory default settings. You will then find that your Wi-Fi network will be disconnected. You’ll need to reconnect all clients using the default network name (the SSID) and password.
  • Restore Factory Settings – If you want to reset your Wireless Gateway’s settings to the factory default settings, then you will need to press the Factory Reset button on your wireless gateway. Restoring factory settings will temporarily disconnect you from Wi-Fi. If asked, customize the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password and connect devices to your home network by using these credentials.

A restart isn’t the same as a factory reset. Factory resets restore your Gateway to its original defaults, including your Wi-Fi name, password, and other settings. To perform a factory reset, use a non-metallic object (like a toothpick) to press down on the Reset button on the rear of the Gateway for 30 full seconds. You’ll be asked to create a custom Wi-Fi network name and password and connect devices to your home network by using these details.
